Originally, the separation between private branch exchanges, also called PBXs, and key systems was that the latter allowed the users to view and control any call. The PBX, on the other hand, operated much like public phone system. The calls were routed to the right destination through dialing directly. PBX is more commonly used in modern times, though it may be hard for some to distinguish the technical differences between these two major phone setups.

Some of the most modern versions do not require use of a dial plan.
It is not common for these to be used in home setting. This is because there is not a large need. With that said, there are some cases in which they may be applied residential, for instance: those who operate small businesses from home. Both large and small organizations have a great need for complex setups because a high volume of outbound and inbound calls occur daily.

They allow for common capabilities, such as transfers, auto dialing, interactive voice response, speed dialing, forwarding, conference calls, call waiting, blocking, auto ring back, and more. Nonetheless, the main intent of these is to initiate connections, maintain these connections, disconnect and then offer information for the purpose of accounting.
A business telephone system is one that is used in most in business environments. These setups differ greatly, but are primarily used for the purpose of taking inbound calls and sending outbound calls. Usually they are private and may be used on a small or large scale.
