The History of MP3 Download

By James M. Waters

A group of experts known as MPEG or moving pictures expert group had named an audio-specific format MP3 designed to be a part of MPEG-1. MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 Audio Layer III or simply MP3 had been an extension of standard MPEG-1 to a standard MPEG-2. Lossy data compression is being utilized and is a format commonly used for audio storage. Using digital audio players, it is the consumer's main choice for transfer of music and playback.

The algorithm used for MP3 has the sole purpose of producing original uncompressed audio but the advantage of having small data sizes. This is done by reducing sounds that are not commonly heard by the human ears due to its lower frequency, and give importance to the portion of the music that are audible.

MP3 became public and had become an overnight sensation in the internet in the late 1994. A lot of websites offered thousands of free MP3's together with the release of new MP3 audio players. Music lovers were attracted to the MP3 since it allows CD ripping, file sharing, and due to its small size.

Rapid MP3 downloads all over the world has resulted to a couple of problems. One of these is copyright infringement that had coined the term "music piracy". A lot of record companies had been threatened by MP3 sharing because it greatly reduced sales of their labels.

Encryption of MP3's available online using proprietary formats had been the solution to this global problem. This is the way that retailers can ensure that music files can't be used other ways than what they specified. Thus, sharing between peers and global availability of files can be prevented.

Record companies' "Digital Rights Management" had started encryption and MP3 conversion of consumers into other formats to make it available worldwide. File sharing between peers as well as the ability to be played using other devices of audio files had been allowed through decryption and conversion.

Because of the wide acceptance and download streams, organizations and companies have fought over for the license and patenting of MP3's. A lot of claims had been submitted that had lead to legal threats and actions against company owners. As a result, licensing of MP3 patents had led to further uncertainty on which products should be licensed.

MP3's technology had been used to develop other formats as MP3 succeeds worldwide. A lot of alternatives are made available, but MP3 downloads as a source of audio music is still leading worldwide.
