Watch Out So You Don't Get Overcharged for Computer Repair

By Mike Epps

When your computer stops working it is a frustrating thing. Not only is this a huge inconvenience and a cause for concern due to the potential loss of data (imagine all that hard work gone in an instant), but having a computer fixed can cost a lot of money depending on what went wrong. If you're worried about how much you'll pay in case you need computer repair services, here is a short guide to help give you an idea about the kind of cost you can expect:

Hourly rates.

Some computer repair services charge a fee based on the type of work done. Most, though, you will probably be charged by the hour. It will also be the technician who will determine the number of hours it will take to fix your computer.

A $30 rate per hour is typical. Usually, repair time averages 2 hours. So you spend $60, assuming that everything is finished in 2 hours. When the work extends beyond that, prepare to add more. You might also pay extra for software or hardware installation.

To prevent being overcharged by a slow technician, ask if the charging for the computer repair is for the full cost. If it is and the technician was able to fix the problem, you don't have to shell out a single cent.

Consider remote repair.

Some companies fix your computer by getting online. That is, if your computer problem is software-based. You can even see the repair progress in real time. Remote repairs are reasonably priced. Fees start from around $39.

Checkups, diagnostics, installation and/or reinstallation, and other simple tasks of repair and maintenance can cost as small as $25 to about $150 per hour. The low end rate of the spectrum is for the most basic work involved while the high end rate is for a bigger and complex work involved.

Do these check ups and back ups as much as possible so that you don't need costly repairs in the future.

If you're worried about how much to pay when looking for computer repair services, take these things into consideration. That way, you'll be better able to make the right decision.
