Tips for Buying a Computer

By Barb Diddle

The most important question to answer before you begin your new search is: What is your new computer going to be used for? Is your new computer going to be for home use and used for entertainment such as to search the web and email friends and family? If so, an entertainment PC should be able to handle all of your needs. If you are a gamer you will need a gaming pc and they can be a lot more expensive. They require powerful graphic cards and a good processor.

The next item to think about is whether you will purchase a laptop or desktop. A desktop is not as economical as laptops. Before making a decision you evaluate the following:

Screen size- you usually have two sizes to choose from for laptops 15.6" or 17". The smaller screen size is great if you travel a lot but if not, go with the larger screen. If you purchase a desktop you will have a large variety of screen sizes to choose from and you will be able to add an additional monitor.

Battery Power- you need a good battery. Check to see how many hours your machine will run without needing to be plugged in.

Processors- Make sure to purchase a good processor with your machine. You don't want to buy a budget machine and end up with a substandard processor. You also want to know how fast the processor is.

Memory- Ram is short for Random Access Memory. This is the second most import feature for your computer. Ram is what processes the programs and information that your computer uses. You will want to purchase a machine with at least 4 GB of RAM.

Hard Drives- Make sure you purchase a large GB for your new computer. Your hard drive is where your computer stores all of the programs and data for your machine.

If you are going to be using your computer for business you will want a large hard drive and a good amount of ram. You will also need to decide if you want a PC or an Apple Computer. If your job entails a lot of graphic design work, photography or art, you will want to consider buying an Apple instead of a PC. Most people who work in graphic arts, web design and photography usually are Apple users. Apple machines use a different operating system and interface than Microsoft. Apple usually cost a lot more than a PC but they are known to last longer than PC's.

If you decide on a PC, I would recommend that you check out the HP Envy line. They are great machines and come in different screen sizes. You can also get one with 3D. The Envy line also comes with the Beats Audio system which allows you to amplify the sound without external speakers. These machines come with six built in speakers and has integrated HP wireless audio.

As you can see, there are a lot of options to consider before heading out to the store to purchase a new computer. Spend some time reviewing all of the options before you purchase. This will keep you from having buyer's remorse after the purchase.
