Considerations Regarding To 4G Mobile UK

By Beau Harrold

Cellular coverage has blanketed the planet now days, especially in developed nations like the UK. Brits were the first to have 3G networks nearly 10 years ago, but now they lag behind much of Europe and North America in terms of 4G mobile UK. This is not simply a matter of getting it done, however. The troubles with the roll-out of 4G networks have lead to slowing and stopping in the efforts to bring the UK up to speed.

Many people in Great Britain would like 4G access sooner rather than later. In a poll done where over 2000 adults were asked for their opinion on the subject, more than 80% of them stated that they thought 4G coverage should be offered soon. Mentioning reasons like keeping up with competition in other nations, their thoughts were fairly clear. Nevertheless, the survey did not mention whether the people queried knew about the potential problems that new coverage could lead to.

Almost all 4G coverage uses the bandwidth at 800 and 2100Mhz. Older technologies such as 2G and 3G use different bands. The optimal combination of speed and distance, together with building penetration of signals, is achieved at 800Mhz. The problem with this is that many other technologies also rely on frequencies around this band, for similar reasons.

If new 4G technology were installed, up to one in 10 of UK households situated near a 4G tower might have a good signal for their cellular phones, but lose all of their digital television access to free television stations. The towers could potentially interfere with the signal boosters that many people use to get free television channels in their homes. Filters used to reduce this interference are not a complete solution.

Paid television could also be impacted, although people could, of course, choose to change to other options in these cases. However, there are a number of powerful companies behind paid TV now days, since it is such a huge business. This implies that there are powerful opponents standing in the way of rolling out 4G at the moment.

One possible option that is being rolled out is to put up for auction the spectrum that is most desired. This has already been done in certain regions, and some proponents of 4G are blaming its slow roll-out on the failure of these auctions. The slow auctioning process has been mainly caused by delaying tactics from some of the Mobile Companies, who are apparently trusting the courts to sort things out.

Trials with 4G are in progress in several cities in the UK by several large providers. Nevertheless, they are not using the debated frequencies at the moment. The reason that the frequencies are so popular is that they supply bigger areas of coverage with less towers, and penetrate buildings better. Therefore, everyone wants the 'best' frequencies.

It seems doubtful that the UK will not get 4G, but apparently it's going to take its own sweet time getting here. Big companies opposing each other via auctions, deals, courts, and more can take a while to get everything sorted. 4G mobile UK seems like a giant pain right now, but most people believe that the longer-term results will be favourable.
